Donald Trump threatens tariffs on Canadian-made vehicles

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on vehicles manufactured in Canada, stating that Washington does not want Canada to build cars for the American market. The threat follows the breakdown of recent trade negotiations between the two nations.

Following the failure of these talks, the U.S. reportedly implemented a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. In response, Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on American imports and a support plan for businesses and workers effective September 8. Canadian officials attributed the breakdown to the U.S. administration's refusal to grant exemptions for medium and heavy vehicles.

White House advisor Peter Navarro warned that any future trade deals would be less favorable than the previous offer rejected by Canada. Additionally, Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. government to refer to Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’, a move the administration described as honoring the history of the Great Lakes.
