Trump ties US troop withdrawal from Europe to Greenland agreement

President Donald Trump, speaking on Air Force One after the NATO summit in Ankara, warned that any further reduction of U.S. troops stationed in Europe depends on reaching a “very good” deal on Greenland. He said, “A lot’s going to depend on Greenland, and a lot, lot, I think we can make a very good deal in Greenland, and if we don’t, maybe I will,” adding that he has not made a final determination. Trump linked a potential full pull‑out to Denmark’s refusal to hand over control of Greenland, arguing the island must be under U.S. control for security against Russia and China. He also criticized NATO allies for not supporting U.S. positions on Iran and for insufficient defense spending, naming Spain and Italy among those he rebuked. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has repeatedly rejected the U.S. claim, and NATO officials have emphasized alliance unity. Analysts note that the rhetoric could strain NATO cohesion and that the United States could access Greenland’s resources through cooperation rather than territorial claims.
