Ghanaian mother to receive emergency US visa following Bronx shooting

Doris Adu Gyamfi, the mother of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, will be granted an immediate U.S. visa to attend her son’s funeral in New York. The decision follows a telephone conversation between New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump, as reported by Mayor Mamdani on social media.

Javits Frimpong, a Ghanaian immigrant, was fatally shot in the abdomen on October 29, 2026, while walking to school in the Claremont section of the Bronx. He was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim had moved to the United States from Ghana in 2025 to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong.

The Ghanaian government has pledged to cover the full travel costs for Mrs. Adu Gyamfi and will contribute toward a dignified funeral. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that ministry officials are assisting with the visa application process.

Thomas Frimpong has alleged that his son was being bullied at DreamYard Preparatory School, noting that two students had previously been suspended for harassing Javits. While police are investigating the shooting and searching for three teenage suspects seen on CCTV, no arrests have been made and no official motive has been established.
