U.S. leaders mark 25th anniversary of 9/11 attacks in New York

U.S. political leaders gathered in New York City to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden attended the ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial, alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Other notable attendees included Vice President JD Vance, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former mayors Bill de Blasio and Rudy Giuliani.

The ceremony included a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. and the reading of the names of the victims. This year, a seventh moment of silence was added to honor those who died later from illnesses related to toxic exposure during rescue efforts.

President Donald Trump did not attend the New York ceremony, a departure from the tradition of bipartisan presidential attendance. Reports indicate the decision stemmed from a desire to deliver a speech, which organizers of the New York event typically preclude to avoid political polarization. Instead, the President attended a commemoration at the Pentagon in Virginia, where 184 people were killed during the attacks.
