Trump announces plan to turn proposed D.C. arch into military complex
President Donald Trump has announced plans to repurpose a proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., into a military complex. The structure, intended for Memorial Circle near Arlington National Cemetery, is being redesigned at the request of the U.S. military to serve national security purposes.
According to Trump, the facility will be capable of the rapid deployment of large numbers of drones and will include sniper positions on its roof and plaza. The complex is also intended to house and store significant quantities of sniper ammunition. While the administration previously presented the arch as a major tourist attraction and landmark, this new designation shifts its primary function toward military utility.
The project faces significant opposition from veterans' groups, historic preservationists, and lawmakers. Critics argue the structure would negatively impact approximately 40 historic sites, including the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the site's proximity to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, with some officials labeling the drone deployment plan as dangerous for aviation safety.
While the National Capital Planning Commission granted preliminary approval for the site and building plans in July, final reviews are pending further details on aviation safety and transportation impacts. The administration aims to begin construction as early as November.
