Trump celebrates Columbus Day at White House to honor Italian American heritage

President Donald Trump hosted a Columbus Day celebration at the White House to honor Christopher Columbus and celebrate Italian American heritage. During the event, Trump proclaimed Columbus as an “original American hero” and emphasized the importance of protecting historical legacies from what he termed “radical left communists” who seek to erase such traditions.

The ceremony included the presence of diplomats from Italy and Spain, as well as prominent figures such as Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and opera singer Christopher Macchio. Trump announced plans to install a new statue of Columbus in the White House Rose Garden, joining existing monuments to Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. He also called for the immediate return of a Columbus statue to Columbus, Ohio.

The event serves as a strategic cultural move ahead of upcoming elections, aiming to solidify support among the large Italian American electorate. This follows a period where the holiday had been increasingly replaced by Indigenous Peoples’ Day in various jurisdictions during the previous administration.
