During his second term, President Donald Trump has increasingly utilized “national security” justifications to expand executive authority and target perceived enemies. By leveraging the vast security apparatus established after the September 11 attacks, the administration has used emergency powers to threaten domestic dissidents and political opponents.

Specific instances of this tactic include Trump’s recurring interest in the annexation of Greenland. In communications via Truth Social, he has argued that acquiring Greenland is vital for U.S. and global national security, specifically citing the need for the territory in relation to the “Golden Dome” project and to prevent Russia or China from gaining control. Trump also renewed these annexation claims during a NATO summit in July.
