Donald Trump visit to Ireland to include meetings with President Connolly and Taoiseach Martin

U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Ireland on September 12, primarily to attend the Irish Open at his Doonbeg golf resort in County Clare. The visit will include a courtesy call to President Catherine Connolly at Áras an Uachtaráin and a meeting with Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Farmleigh House.

The upcoming meetings have drawn scrutiny due to President Connolly’s history of criticizing U.S. foreign policy and describing the U.S. as an “imperial power.” Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar suggested the meeting is unlikely to be confrontational, noting that Trump is often indifferent to verbal critiques and that diplomatic protocol dictates politeness.

Meanwhile, the Green Party has urged the Taoiseach to use the visit to advocate for human rights and climate action. Green Party spokesperson Janet Horner called for the government to express disdain for “the politics of division, war, climate skepticism and hatred” and to stand in solidarity with those opposing current U.S. policies regarding Gaza and humanitarian aid.
