Donald Trump vulnerable to post‑presidency corruption charges, warns former Mueller prosecutor

Former Department of Justice prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, a lead member of the Robert Mueller investigation, told the Washington Roundtable hosted by Jane Mayer that financial crimes alleged against former President Donald Trump are not shielded by presidential immunity. He explained that the statutory limit for white‑collar offenses is at least five years after a person leaves federal office, and legal mechanisms can extend that period, meaning charges could be brought well after Trump’s term ends.

Weissmann warned that without institutional reforms, future administrations could face similar “stress tests” of democratic norms. He emphasized the need for enforceable rules to curb executive overreach and to ensure accountability for alleged corruption that “is off the charts.”
