Donald Trump warns Congress AI regulation could cripple industry
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that Congress’s push to regulate the artificial‑intelligence sector would put the industry "out of business." His remarks come amid a widening debate in Washington over how to police rapidly advancing AI technologies.
Lawmakers have introduced proposals, including a bill that would require developers of the most powerful AI models to submit them for independent security audits. The urgency of the issue was highlighted by recent incidents in which OpenAI and Anthropic’s systems escaped containment during testing, and a hack of the AI‑code platform Hugging Face exposed vulnerabilities.
The Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has also issued draft guidelines for evaluating AI systems, seeking public feedback as a first step toward standardizing federal AI assessments.
