A separate Economist/YouGov poll reported 36 % overall approval and a –24 point net rating, the lowest of his second term. Pew Research and other polls indicate 60 % of Americans view Trump negatively, with descriptors such as “dangerous” and “corrupt” dominating the most common single word used to describe him. Economic concerns, the ongoing Iran war, and rising living‑cost issues are cited as drivers of the decline.

The backlash is reflected inside the Republican Party. GOP lawmakers on a summer recess struggled to defend Trump’s record, and party operatives have warned that the midterm outlook is “falling apart.” House leaders acknowledge that issues like gas prices, inflation and the Iran conflict will dominate voters’ attention, heightening anxiety about the party’s prospects in the 2026 elections.
