Donald Trump’s criticism of Mexico’s president sparks political backlash

Morena deputy coordinator Ricardo Monreal said U.S. President Donald Trump’s attacks on President Claudia Sheinbaum are driven by his own electoral campaign and warned that the comments damage Mexico‑U.S. relations ahead of the July 1 deadline when the United States, Canada and Mexico will decide the future of the T‑MEC trade pact. Monreal urged prudence, noting that Trump’s remarks “affect the friendship the President has tried to maintain with the United States.”

Chamber of Deputies president Kenia López called for an “official state response,” saying Trump’s statements cast doubt on Mexico’s ability to guarantee security, governance and territorial control at the highest international forums.

The Mexican officials stressed that recent declines in crime and homicides demonstrate the administration’s effectiveness, and they warned against reacting with hostility, emphasizing the need for rational dialogue as the three‑nation trade agreement’s fate hangs in the balance.
