Donald Trump's silence on Brazil elections was strategic, advisor says
A White House advisor informed The Washington Post that the decision by Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to remain silent regarding the Brazilian elections was a strategic move intended to benefit Flávio Bolsonaro.
While Trump has previously engaged with foreign elections, the administration maintained an “unusual” silence during the first round of voting. The advisor stated that the goal was to “minimize any appearance or foundation for the argument that the US is interfering” and noted that if support might be counterproductive, it would not be given.
Following the confirmation that Flávio Bolsonaro would proceed to the second round against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, US leaders expressed minimal reaction. Rubio indicated he would monitor developments, while Trump described the result as a victory without providing specific details.
