Washington Triumphal Arch to become military complex

President Donald Trump announced that a planned 76-meter (250-foot) triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., will be converted into a top-grade military complex. The structure, intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, is proposed for a location in Memorial Circle near the Arlington Memorial Bridge, situated between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

According to Trump, the decision was made at the request of the U.S. military for national security purposes. The complex is intended to house and rapidly deploy large numbers of drones, provide sniper positions on the roof and plaza, and store significant quantities of sniper ammunition. While Trump touted the facility as unique globally, the Pentagon has declined to comment on the specific operational details.

The project faces significant opposition and legal hurdles. A group of Vietnam War veterans has filed a lawsuit to block construction, arguing the arch lacks necessary congressional approval and would obstruct the historic view between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Additionally, the National Park Service has noted that the project could negatively impact historically significant objects in the area.

Regarding aviation safety, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) determined the structure does not pose a flight hazard to nearby Ronald Reagan National Airport, provided it includes an eternal flame and continuous floodlighting to ensure visibility for pilots.
