Donald Tusk affirms strict migration policy for Poland

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has reaffirmed a hardline stance on migration following meetings with European leaders in Brussels. Tusk stated that Poland will not repeat the mistakes of Western European nations and intends to defend its borders strictly. He emphasized that Poland maintains an independent asylum policy that does not accept applications and involves the deportation of those violating national laws.

The Polish government reported a significant decrease in attempted border crossings from Belarus, noting a drop from approximately 15,500 in the first half of 2025 to fewer than 250 in the same period this year. While Poland has received a one-year exemption from the EU migration pact due to its absorption of Ukrainian refugees, the European Commission continues to monitor the country's migratory pressure.

These statements have drawn criticism from domestic political figures. Former Prime Minister Beata Szydło accused Tusk of posturing, reminding critics of his previous stances regarding EU solidarity and the potential consequences of refusing migrant distribution. Additionally, MEP Eva Zyonczkowska-Hernik criticized Tusk’s recent comments regarding the ‘friendship’ between Poland and Ukraine, suggesting his diplomatic approach might prioritize ties over Polish national interests.
