Donald Tusk urges voting for Maria Skłodowska-Curie on euro banknotes
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is encouraging citizens to participate in a European Central Bank (ECB) public survey regarding the design of new euro banknotes. Tusk specifically urged voters to support the inclusion of Maria Skłodowska-Curie, the renowned Polish Nobel laureate, on the 20 euro note.
The ECB is planning to update the appearance of euro banknotes for the first time since 2002 to better reflect European identity. The current survey allows the public to choose between two primary themes: cultural figures or natural elements. If the cultural theme is selected, figures such as Skłodowska-Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, or Ludwig van Beethoven could appear on the notes. If the nature theme wins, the designs will feature elements like the jay bird.
Public input can be submitted via the ECB website until September 21. While the survey is a key part of the process, the ECB noted that the final decision rests with the Governing Council, which will consider both public opinion and expert advice. The new generation of banknotes is expected to enter circulation around 2030 or 2031.
