Dong-A ST demonstrates topical potential for psoriasis treatment Icotrokinra
Dong-A ST has confirmed the potential to develop a topical formulation of Icotrokinra, an ingredient used for treating psoriasis, through non-clinical research. The company presented these findings at the AAPS PharmSci 360 international conference in New Orleans.
Icotrokinra is a macrocyclic peptide IL-23 receptor antagonist that selectively binds to interleukin-23 receptors to block inflammatory signals. While an oral version of the treatment received US FDA approval in March, Dong-A ST’s research focuses on expanding its application to a topical form that can be applied directly to the skin.
Through in vitro skin permeability and retention evaluations, the company’s Drug Delivery System (DDS) team secured a formulation capable of skin delivery. In animal models of skin inflammation, the formulation demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing the gene expression of psoriasis-related inflammatory cytokines, specifically IL-17A, IL-17F, and IL-22.
Bank of America has projected that the maximum annual revenue for Icotrokinra-based oral treatments could reach $4.5 billion.
