Dong Nai General Hospital performs first successful kidney transplant

Dong Nai General Hospital has successfully performed its first kidney transplant, marking the first organ transplant procedure conducted in the Dong Nai province. The surgery, which took place on October 6, involved a 46-year-old female recipient suffering from end-stage chronic kidney disease and her 40-year-old husband, who acted as the donor.

The procedure was carried out with technical support and expertise from specialists at Cho Ray Hospital, who assisted in training, technical transfer, and surgical consultation. Following the transplant, the donor recovered and was discharged on October 12, while the recipient's health remained stable as of October 19.

This medical milestone follows a decision by the Ministry of Health in February to authorize the hospital to implement kidney transplant techniques from both living and deceased donors. Local health officials noted that nearly 1,000 people in Dong Nai currently require regular dialysis. The successful operation is expected to expand treatment options for local patients and enhance the specialized medical capabilities of the regional healthcare system.
