Dong Van Karst Plateau granted UNESCO Global Geopark status renewal
The UNESCO Global Geoparks Council has unanimously awarded the “Green Card” to the Dong Van Karst Plateau, the highest rating in the periodic re-evaluation process. This decision, reached during the 11th UNESCO Global Geoparks Council meeting held from November 2 to 4, 2026, leads to a recommendation to extend the site’s UNESCO Global Geopark status for an additional four years.
This marks the fourth consecutive time the plateau has successfully passed the re-evaluation process. The recognition highlights international appreciation for Vietnam’s efforts in preserving geological, natural, and cultural heritage while integrating conservation with sustainable tourism and local livelihood improvements.
Nguyen Thi Van Anh, the Ambassador and Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to UNESCO, stated that the result reflects the persistent efforts of local authorities, relevant sectors, and communities to promote the heritage value of the plateau and create jobs, particularly for ethnic minority groups.
