Donja Jablanica flood investigation and reconstruction face delays

Two years after the catastrophic floods in October 2024 that claimed 19 lives in Donja Jablanica and eight others in Fojnica and Konjic, residents face unresolved questions regarding reconstruction and legal accountability.

In Donja Jablanica, the reconstruction of housing and infrastructure remains incomplete. While humanitarian organizations like Pomozi.ba, the Red Cross, and the Islamic Community have provided aid—including the near completion of 16 houses for 20 families—official institutional efforts have been criticized as slow and ineffective. Local leaders note that even basic maintenance, such as cleaning drainage channels, has not been finalized.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the investigation led by the Prosecutor's Office of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. Reports suggest that evidence may have been collected unlawfully, which could lead to the dismissal of indictments or the acquittal of defendants. Critics suggest these procedural failures might stem from incompetence or intentional attempts to protect politically connected individuals.
