Jablanica observes Day of Mourning two years after fatal floods

Jablanica has declared a Day of Mourning to mark the second anniversary of the catastrophic floods and landslides that occurred on the night of October 3–4, 2024. The disaster resulted in 27 deaths across Bosnia and Herzegovina, with 19 of those fatalities occurring in Donja Jablanica due to a massive landslide of rock and debris from a nearby quarry.

Two years after the event, residents of Donja Jablanica continue to face significant hardships. While much of the physical infrastructure has been repaired, many families remain in temporary containers or rented accommodations, waiting for the completion of new homes. Some residents report that construction deadlines have been missed and that humanitarian aid has diminished.

Legal investigations into the tragedy are ongoing. The Special Department for Combating Corruption, Organized and Inter-Entity Crime (POSKOK) of the Federal Prosecutor's Office is investigating potential criminal acts, including abuse of office and causing public danger. The probe specifically examines the circumstances surrounding the nearby quarry and whether human error or improper permits contributed to the landslide that buried the settlement.
