Donkey conservationists warn in vitro research may not stop extinction

A coalition of over 50 organizations, scientists, and specialists has warned that in vitro embryo production may not be sufficient to protect Brazil's donkey populations from extinction. The warning follows news that the Federal University of Viçosa is studying the in vitro production of donkey embryos.

Experts argue that laboratory success in creating embryos is distinct from actual species preservation. They emphasize that for this biotechnology to have a real impact on population numbers, it must demonstrate consistent gestation rates, the birth of healthy animals, survival, and reproductive viability at scale.

The current threat stems from extractive practices where donkeys in Northeast Brazil are slaughtered for their skins, which are then exported to countries such as China. With an estimated 2,000 donkeys slaughtered monthly, critics question whether laboratory reproduction can keep pace with the rate of removal from the wild.
