Donmar Warehouse stages Turgenev’s ‘A Month in the Country’
The Donmar Warehouse in London is hosting a production of Ivan Turgenev’s play, ‘A Month in the Country’, adapted by Brian Friel and directed by Lyndsey Turner. The production explores themes of love, misplaced affection, and the generational gap through a subtle and visually striking lens.
Sophie Okonedo stars as Natalya Petrovna, a character described as mercurial and complex, whose life is disrupted by the arrival of a young tutor, Aleksey Belyayev, played by Patrick Gibson. The cast also includes Thomas Arnold as Natalya’s husband, Arkady; Rachelle Diedericks as the ward Vera; and Alistair Petrie as Michel.
Reviews highlight the production's creative use of space, intimate atmosphere, and visual design, which utilizes golden summer light and a unique set to facilitate scene changes. The adaptation by Friel is noted for its ability to balance the text's humor and irony with the emotional nuances of the characters.
