Donnie Darko to receive 25th anniversary 4K theatrical re-release

Fathom Entertainment and Saga Arts have announced a nationwide theatrical re-release of the cult classic sci-fi psychological thriller ‘Donnie Darko’ to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The event, scheduled to begin on ‘Donnie Darko Day’ from October 2-4, 2026, will feature a new 4K restoration of the film.

Directed by Richard Kelly and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, the film is being presented in its widest theatrical release to date. The anniversary event includes an exclusive introduction from Kelly at the Aero Theatre in collaboration with American Cinematheque, where he will discuss the film’s enduring legacy.

While the original 2001 film initially struggled at the box office, it has since gained significant popularity. Discussions surrounding the film's legacy often include its sequel, ‘S. Darko’, which was released in 2009 but has been disavowed by the original director.
