Donnie Nelson details Roma basketball plans and Luka Doncic involvement
Donnie Nelson, general manager and managing partner of a new basketball project in Rome, has detailed the club's ambitions following its relocation from Vanoli Cremona. The project involves investment from NBA superstar Luka Doncic, who expressed enthusiasm and a desire to invest his own capital into the venture.
Nelson noted that while the long-term goal includes participating in a potential NBA Europe expansion, the club is committed to staying in Rome regardless of whether such a league materializes. He expressed uncertainty regarding whether the European market could support two major competing leagues, referring to the potential fragmentation between Euroleague Basketball and the NBA.
The management is currently exploring permanent arena upgrades at either the PalaEUR or Foro Italico. Nelson also stated that the club is prepared to compete for fans alongside the city's other club, Maxima Roma. The team, originally known as Roma SPQR, is currently competing in the 2026–27 BKT EuroCup and Italy’s Serie A.
