Donor-advised funds emerge as vital resource for Canadian charities

The Canadian charitable sector is facing significant financial pressure due to inflation, rising service demands, and a decline in individual donors. To combat these challenges, donor-advised funds (DAFs) have emerged as a critical source of capital. While DAFs are well-established in the United States, they have seen substantial growth in Canada, where they now hold billions of dollars intended for charitable purposes.

According to the Canada Revenue Agency, there are over 85,000 registered charities in the country. The nonprofit sector is a major economic driver, contributing approximately 8.2% to Canada’s GDP and employing more than 2.4 million people. While the philanthropic foundation sector holds over $150 billion in assets, much of this funding is currently concentrated among large institutions like universities and hospitals, leaving smaller and medium-sized charities to seek more diverse revenue streams through tools like DAFs.
