Doosan Enerbility to manufacture first commercial SMR reactor modules

Doosan Enerbility has signed a contract with U.S.-based NuScale Power to manufacture the Upper Reactor Pressure Vessel (URPV) modules for small modular reactors (SMRs). This agreement marks a transition in the partnership from material supply, established in 2023, to the full-scale production of commercial reactor components.

The URPV is a critical component designed to contain high-temperature and high-pressure coolant within the reactor pressure vessel. NuScale Power’s SMR design is notable for being the first to receive design approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

According to NuScale Power CEO John Hopkins, the contract represents significant progress in converting NRC-approved designs into deliverable modules. Doosan Enerbility President Kim Jong-doo stated that the deal serves as a vital turning point for SMR technology, moving from the technical verification stage to actual commercial manufacturing.
