DOP Bierzo updates wine regulations with new irrigation and aging rules
Spain's Instituto Tecnológico Agrario de Castilla y León (ITACyL) approved the modification of the DOP Bierzo pliego de condiciones, following a request from the Consejo Regulador de la DO Bierzo. The update introduces a new irrigation regime, adjusts several physico‑chemical parameters, and lowers the probable alcohol degree for the Godello grape variety.
The revised rules also add specific aging requirements, recognise synonym grape varieties, set limits on the maximum grape production for new plantings and grafted vines, and correct the delimitation of certain sub‑zones. The changes are effective immediately in Spain, with EU publication pending.
The amendment is classified as a normal modification, not affecting any European‑wide thresholds that would trigger a more extensive revision.
