Dora Bakoyannis visits fire‑hit South Rethymno, pledges reconstruction

Greek MP Dora Bakoyannis travelled to South Rethymno to assess the damage caused by a recent destructive wildfire. She inspected the villages of Kerame and Spili, where the blaze forced the evacuation of tourists.

During the visit she met the mayor of Agios Vasileios, Giannis Tatarakis, and Crete’s deputy regional governor for civil protection, George Tsapako, as well as fire‑brigade, police and navy personnel. Bakoyannis praised the “exemplary” evacuation, noted that the Preveli palm forest remained intact, and warned that the climate crisis threatens the region. She promised that homes, businesses and olive groves will be rebuilt and replanted.
