Doraemon: Castle of the Undersea Devil sees breakout box office in India

The anime film ‘Doraemon: Castle of the Undersea Devil’ is experiencing a breakout theatrical performance in India. After earning Rs 2.90 crore on its opening day, the film collected an estimated Rs 2.60 crore on its second day, bringing its two-day gross total to Rs 5.50 crore.

This performance marks a significant departure from previous entries in the franchise, which typically grossed around Rs 5 crore during their entire theatrical runs in India. The film saw only a 10 per cent drop on its second day, indicating strong audience retention. Projections suggest the opening weekend could reach between Rs 8 crore and Rs 9 crore, potentially setting a new record for the franchise in the region.

Directed by Tetsuo Yajima and produced by Shin-Ei Animation, the 2026 science fantasy film is a modern remake of the 1983 title ‘Doraemon: Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil’. The film’s success is attributed to its appeal across multiple demographics, including children, teenagers, and nostalgic adults.
