Dorfen water supply faces long-term challenges despite current stability

In Dorfen, Germany, the water supply situation is currently stable following recent rainfall, but long-term challenges persist. Stadtwerke Dorfen reported supplying approximately 535,000 cubic meters of drinking water to roughly 10,000 residents in 2025, averaging 146 liters per person per day.

This per capita consumption exceeds the Bavarian state average of 136 liters. Klaus Steiner, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Dorfen, noted that increasing population growth and rising per capita demand due to increasing dryness are pushing the utility toward its limits. The water is currently sourced from deep Tertiary rock layers at a depth of 160 meters, which remains free of industrial pollutants.
