Dorian Matlija criticizes Albanian electoral system and political control

Lawyer Dorian Matlija has criticized the current political climate in Albania, suggesting that the lack of democratic avenues for citizens to disagree with the government may lead to social unrest and violence.

Matlija argues that the ruling party holds a supermajority in Parliament, controlling approximately 60% of seats, which allows them to pass critical laws requiring qualified majorities. He contends that the electoral system disproportionately favors large parties, such as the Socialist Party (PS), at the expense of smaller ones like the Democratic Party (PD).

Furthermore, he critiques the proportional representation system for prioritizing blind loyalty to party leaders over community respect. He cites Erion Braçe as an example of a politician who, despite personal opposition to certain reforms, voted in favor to avoid risking his position within the parliamentary group. Matlija concludes that this dynamic allows party leaders to control both the government and the parliament, rather than the parliament providing oversight to the government.
