Dorida Municipality introduces birth grants to combat population decline
The Municipality of Dorida has approved a new initiative to provide financial assistance for every newborn in the region to combat population decline. The program, funded entirely by the municipality's own savings rather than state or European funds, offers tiered payments based on the order of birth.
According to Mayor Dimitris Giannopoulos, the grants are structured as follows: 1,000 euros for the first child, 2,000 euros for the second, 3,000 euros for the third, and 3,000 euros for each subsequent child. This means a family with three children could receive a total of 6,000 euros.
The primary objectives are to support new mothers and couples, encourage residents to remain in the area, and maintain the local student population to ensure the continued operation of regional schools. To qualify, applicants must be permanent residents and provide documentation, such as tax records, proving residency in the municipality for the previous two years.
