Dormillouse is France's only inhabited village without road access

Dormillouse, located at an altitude of 1,700 meters in the Écrins National Park within the Hautes-Alpes, is the only inhabited village in metropolitan France that is not connected to any road.

Accessing the hamlet requires intensive hiking, taking approximately 45 minutes in the summer or up to two hours via snowshoes or skis in the winter. Visitors must carry their own supplies as there are no local shops or home delivery services. The settlement operates without a traditional electrical grid, relying instead on solar energy.
