Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebrated on August 15

The feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God is observed on August 15. According to religious tradition, the Virgin Mary lived in Jerusalem at the home of the Apostle John on Mount Zion, where she provided guidance and support to the apostles.

Following an announcement from the Archangel Gabriel that she would pass away in three days, Mary requested to see the apostles one last time. The apostles gathered at her home to receive her final encouragements and counsel before she peacefully surrendered her spirit to God. Tradition holds that when the apostles later opened her tomb, they found only her shroud, as her body was no longer present.
