Dorsten cemetery provides final resting place for Soviet prisoner of war
A family from New York traveled to Dorsten, Germany, to locate the final resting place of Viktor Karpunin, a Soviet prisoner of war who died during World War II.
Olga Karpunina, originally from Odessa, Ukraine, initiated a search through the Dorsten city archives approximately one year ago. The search was prompted by her grandfather's lifelong unsuccessful attempt to find his brother's grave. Following inquiries with city archivist Martin Köcher, Dr. Marius Seydel of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge confirmed that Karpunin was buried in a mass grave at the Russian cemetery in Holsterhausen.
In early August, Karpunina and her family visited the site to pay their respects to Viktor Karpunin, who passed away on December 14, 1943. The visit included local officials and representatives from the Association for Local and Regional History.
