French authorities charge six taxi drivers for migrant smuggling
French authorities have charged six private taxi drivers from rental companies for their involvement in human smuggling operations. The individuals are accused of repeatedly assisting illegal migrants by transporting them from hiding places in Lille to the northern French coast.
According to investigators, the drivers charged migrants approximately 300 euros per trip. To evade police detection, the drivers reportedly packed up to eight people into single vehicles to reach designated locations where migrants could board smuggling boats intended for English Channel crossings. This method is increasingly used to bypass heightened security and police presence in traditional departure areas like Calais and Dunkirk.
