Dortmund advances school construction with modular green‑steel building and new Hacheney campus

The Heisenberg Gymnasium in Dortmund has opened Germany's first modular school building that uses CO₂‑reduced "green steel" from Kloeckner Metals. The 3,730 m² extension comprises three full floors plus a mezzanine, built from 82 pre‑manufactured modules, and includes sustainable features such as a green roof, renewable energy sources and barrier‑free design.

Meanwhile, the city is clearing a 48,000 m² site beside the B54 in the Hacheney district to construct a new comprehensive school. Demolition of former facilities is underway, with the first lower‑secondary building scheduled for completion in summer 2028. The school will initially accommodate 700‑800 pupils, expanding to about 1,300 when fully built. Traffic management plans are being developed to address concerns about parent‑taxi and construction vehicle congestion on Glückaufsegenstraße.
