Dortmund Police shift stadium security responsibility to football clubs
Dortmund Police are implementing a new security strategy for professional football matches, shifting more responsibility to clubs. Under the new approach, police officers will no longer maintain a constant presence within stadium areas or accompany fan marches as a standard practice.
Police President Tim Frommeyer stated that officers will only intervene in exceptional circumstances, specifically to prevent threats to life and limb or to respond to crimes requiring immediate action. This shift follows a cooperation agreement within the North Rhine-Westphalia stadium alliances, introduced by Interior Minister Herbert Reul.
Frommeyer noted that in the previous season, police in North Rhine-Westphalia dedicated approximately 460,000 working hours to football-related duties, a workload he described as unsustainable. He emphasized that clubs are best positioned to manage security as they understand their facilities and fans most intimately.
Despite the reduced presence, authorities confirmed they will maintain a repressive stance against known troublemakers through measures such as stadium bans, entry prohibitions, and increased club-led entrance controls to prevent the smuggling of pyrotechnics.
