Doshisha International High School to cancel Okinawa trip after fatal boat accident

Doshisha International High School is moving toward canceling this year's school trip to Okinawa following a fatal boating accident in Henoko. The incident, which occurred in March, involved the capsizing of two boats, resulting in the deaths of 17-year-old student Chika Takeishi and a 71-year-old captain.

A third-party committee investigation concluded that the school failed to conduct prior site inspections or establish safety verification procedures, citing a breach of the duty to ensure student safety as the primary cause. In response to the findings, the school's principal has been dismissed, and the chairperson of School Corporation Doshisha has expressed intentions to resign.

Beyond safety concerns, the school faces scrutiny regarding the educational neutrality of its curriculum. The training program included visits to politically sensitive areas related to base construction disputes. School Corporation Doshisha plans to establish a new third-party committee to investigate matters concerning educational neutrality and governance.
