Douala 4ème faces sanitation crisis amid failed waste contract

In the Douala 4ème district of Cameroon, a waste management contract worth 14.25 billion FCFA has resulted in a significant sanitation crisis. The contract, awarded to GENELCAM SARL through a direct agreement approved by the Presidency, was intended to manage collection and cleaning for a five-year period.

However, operational failures have led to massive accumulations of refuse in areas such as Bonabéri, Ndobo, and Forêt Bar. Reports indicate a severe logistical breakdown: out of the 25 trucks required by the contract, only six are currently active, while the remainder are reportedly broken down or abandoned. Consequently, the monthly collection rate has fallen to just 29% of the 6,600-ton target, causing widespread public indignation.
