Douala faces waste management crisis and sanitation concerns

Douala is facing a significant waste management crisis, characterized by accumulating refuse in neighborhoods like Bonabéri. Residents report that mountains of household waste are obstructing public roads and threatening public health, particularly as the new school year approaches. Despite a large-scale contract awarded to a new operator under a five-year agreement, operational failures have led to overflowing bins and widespread unsanitary conditions.

Data indicates a substantial gap in waste collection. While the city produces approximately 2,700 tons of waste daily, Hysacam reportedly collects only about 1,800 tons, leaving roughly 900 tons unmanaged each day. This shortfall is compounded by logistical challenges, including neighborhood accessibility and the lack of local disposal sites.

In response to the situation, the Douala Urban Community (CUD) has urged residents to use sealed trash bags to facilitate collection and prevent litter from entering drainage systems, which helps mitigate flooding. However, this recommendation has raised concerns regarding the additional cost of purchasing bags for households with varying income levels.
