Douala flooding causes widespread disruption and one death
Heavy rainfall in Douala has caused widespread flooding across several neighborhoods, including Logbessou, Logpom, Bonamoussadi, Bepanda, and the PK12, PK13, and PK14 areas. The flooding has rendered major infrastructure impassable, specifically the Sable bridge and the Makepe Missoke bridge, cutting off peripheral neighborhoods from the city center.
The weather has significantly disrupted daily life, causing delays for workers and students, with some residents unable to leave their homes. In the Douala V district, specifically in Bonabo, the situation turned fatal when a pregnant woman died from electrocution following the flooding of her home. The death was confirmed by the Bepanda gendarmerie brigade.
In areas like Bonamoussadi, homes near the Mbanya River have been submerged. Traffic disruptions are severe, with drivers forced to seek alternative routes through Bepanda or Logpom, and some local motorcycle taxi operators charging fees to help people cross flooded sections. The flooding highlights recurring structural issues regarding urban planning and drainage in the city.
