Édouard Mendy retires from Senegal national football team

Senegalese goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 34. The Al-Ahli shot-stopper shared the news via a video on social media, expressing his gratitude to the nation with the message, “Jerejef (Thank you) Senegal.”

Over an eight-year international career that began in 2018, Mendy earned 59 caps and recorded 31 clean sheets. He was a central figure in Senegal’s most successful era, notably helping the team secure its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021. His individual accolades include being named the best goalkeeper at the 2021 AFCON and receiving the 2022 FIFA Best Goalkeeper award.

Mendy also represented Senegal at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups. His departure leaves a significant vacancy for new head coach Patrick Vieira to address as the team prepares for upcoming continental qualifiers.
