Doudou Ndiaye Rose, Senegalese sabar master, dies at 85

Senegal has lost Doudou Ndiaye Rose, a master of sabar drumming and a prominent figure in the nation's cultural history. He passed away at the age of 85 at the Aristide-Le Dantec hospital in Dakar.

Born Mamadou Ndiaye into a lineage of Wolof griots, he became a global ambassador for Senegalese percussion. Known as a ‘mathematician of rhythms,’ he was celebrated for his ability to lead dozens of percussionists simultaneously. His career included collaborations with international artists such as Miles Davis, the Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Rose played a significant role in Senegal's national identity, serving as the chief drum major for the Daniel-Sorano National Theater and leading percussion for independence parades. In 2006, UNESCO recognized his contributions to cultural heritage by designating him a ‘living human treasure.’
