Prime Minister Mark Carney backs $10 billion Roberts Bank port expansion in Vancouver

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced federal backing for a major expansion of the Port of Vancouver’s Roberts Bank Terminal 2. The plan adds a new three‑berth terminal that would lift container handling capacity by about 50 percent. The government is earmarking roughly $10 billion for the project, which Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon says could generate up to $100 billion in additional annual trade capacity.

The expansion is promoted as a way to boost Canada’s economic independence and shift exports away from the United States, with expectations of more than 17,000 construction jobs, 18,000 related jobs and another 17,000 full‑time operational positions. Ottawa has referred the proposal to the Major Projects Office for possible fast‑tracking and is beginning consultations with Indigenous communities and local First Nations. Environmental groups have raised concerns that the project could threaten the habitat of the endangered southern‑resident killer whales.

The investment is part of a broader strategy to diversify the Canadian economy, increase trade with Asian markets and reduce reliance on U.S. corridors, while also tying into discussions about a West Coast oil pipeline that could terminate at the expanded terminal.
