Douglas County Commission approves funding and faces ballot questions
The Douglas County Commission has approved funding for several community initiatives, including a $231,000 budget for the 2027 Peer Fellow program. This program employs individuals with lived experience in homelessness, food insecurity, and behavioral health crises to work with local organizations such as Just Food and Artists Helping the Homeless. Additionally, the commission approved funds to launch Anchor Pointe, a clubhouse-model program designed to provide employment and community connection for those with mental illness or substance use disorders. The commission also reallocated existing substance use treatment funds to organizations including DCCCA and Mirror Inc.
Separately, Douglas County voters will decide on several ballot questions regarding the structure of the Board of Commissioners. The “3 to 5” initiative, which gathered over 20,000 signatures, proposes increasing the number of commissioners from three to five and dividing the county into specific districts. Proponents argue this change would allow for more diverse representation. However, commissioners have added measures to the ballot that would allow all five commissioners to serve at-large and included a question regarding the potential $1.3 million cost of expanding the board.
