Douglas Murray books removed from Artforum bookstore in Slovakia
The removal of British conservative author Douglas Murray’s books from the Artforum bookstore online shop has sparked controversy in Slovakia. When questioned about the disappearance of his works, Artforum stated, “We are a selective bookstore and we select books,” adding that they had decided not to carry his titles.
Murray’s book, “The War on the West” (translated in Slovakia as “On Democracies and Death Cults”), explores the origins of the Middle East conflict and European reactions to it. The book has become a focal point of tension following protests by the initiative Otvorená kultúra, which sought to cancel a discussion about the work at the Shalom Chaverim Jewish culture festival. The initiative criticized Murray’s views as xenophobic, specifically noting his rejection of the term “genocide” regarding Israel’s actions.
Political scientist Grigorij Mesežnikov, who participated in the discussion at the Aréna Theatre, addressed the rising polarization and concerns regarding antisemitism in progressive circles. Mesežnikov defended Israel’s military actions in Gaza, arguing that Hamas uses civilians as cover, making military strikes necessary. While the discussion faced pressure for cancellation, it proceeded in a calm atmosphere, highlighting deep societal divisions regarding the conflict.
