Douglas Ruas proclaimed Rio de Janeiro governor after vote recount

The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) has officially proclaimed Douglas Ruas (PL) as the winner of the Rio de Janeiro governorship in the first round of the 2026 elections. This decision follows a vote recount triggered by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), which invalidated 274,411 votes previously cast for Anthony Garotinho after his candidacy registration was rejected. Following the recount, Ruas secured 50.88% of the valid votes, surpassing the absolute majority required to avoid a second round.

In response to ongoing security concerns, the TRE-RJ unanimously voted to request federal military support for the upcoming presidential second round on October 25. The request, which will be sent to the TSE for approval, aims to address threats posed by criminal factions and militias in 15 municipalities within the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, including the capital, Niterói, and Duque de Caxias. If approved, personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force will assist with logistics and patrolling.

Meanwhile, the PSD party has filed an action with the Supreme Federal Court, seeking to suspend the recount and mandate a second round for the governorship, arguing that the election outcome should depend on voter intent rather than procedural changes.
