Douglas Ruas discusses fiscal cuts and police body cameras
Douglas Ruas, the Liberal Party (PL) candidate for the governorship of Rio de Janeiro, addressed fiscal management and public security during a recent interview. Ruas praised the interim administration of Governor Ricardo Couto for implementing cost-cutting measures to streamline the public machine and redirect funds toward investments.
Regarding public security, Ruas stated that the use of body cameras by police officers must comply with Supreme Federal Court (STF) decisions but should not be used as a “witch hunt” against officers. He emphasized that any officer attempting to sabotage the equipment would face legal punishment.
Additionally, Ruas proposed that instances of police officers acting in legitimate defense should no longer be classified under “violent lethality” statistics. He argued that current statistical methods unfairly penalize officers who must return fire to protect themselves and citizens during operations.
